Guano is a product that used to be used in agriculture before fertilizers came on the rise. Especially in Groningen and Drenthe, much use is made of guano, which in Groningen used to be known as "chili powder". Ede Staal, a well-known folk singer from Groningen, has even written a song about it.
The guano would have been imported from Chile Peru at the time. Thanks to Guano it was possible to practice agriculture on the poor sandy soils.
Due to fertilizers, guano has disappeared from the field of view of professional agriculture and horticulture. Now that fertilizers are putting pressure on soil life and soils are becoming exhausted, old products such as lava flour, vermicompost and Guano suddenly seem to be coming back into the picture.
