What is Perlite?
Perlite is derived from obsidian, a volcanic glass that contains water. When heated to temperatures of approximately 900°C to 1200°C, it expands as the trapped water evaporates. The result is a white, granular material with a honeycomb structure. This structure makes it incredibly lightweight and excellent at retaining both water and air.
What is Perlite used for?
Perlite has a wide range of applications, particularly in the following sectors:
Horticulture
Soil Improvement: Perlite is often used to improve soil structure. It makes heavy soils more aerated and enhances drainage while retaining water and nutrients.
Seedling and Cutting Soil: Thanks to its airy structure, perlite is ideal for germinating seeds and rooting cuttings. It prevents roots from suffocating due to excess water.
Hydroponics: Perlite serves as a growing medium in hydroponic systems, supporting plants and optimizing water and oxygen supply.
Construction
Insulation: Perlite is used as thermal and acoustic insulation in walls and roofs.
Lightweight Concrete: It is added to cement to create lightweight and insulating concrete.
Other Applications
Filter Material: In industrial processes, perlite is used as a filter for liquids, such as in water purification and the production of wine and beer.
Perlite Dosage
The amount of perlite you need depends on its purpose:
Soil Improvement: Mix 10-30% perlite into the existing soil to improve aeration and drainage.
Seedling and Cutting Soil: Combine perlite with potting soil in a 1:1 ratio for optimal results.
Hydroponics: Use perlite as a standalone medium or mix it with other substrates like coco coir.
What is the difference between Perlite and Vermiculite?
While both perlite and vermiculite are used in horticulture, they have distinct properties and applications:
Property | Perlite | Vermiculite |
---|---|---|
Material | Volcanic rock | Expanded mica |
Texture | Granular, hard | Flaky, soft |
Water Retention | Retains water but offers excellent drainage | Retains more water than perlite |
Usage | Ideal for drainage and aeration in soil | Suitable for seed germination and water retention |
Weight | Lightweight | Slightly heavier than perlite |
Choose perlite to improve drainage and aeration, and vermiculite if you need to focus on water retention, such as for seed germination.
